HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Florida mayor has been removed from office following her arrest on 3 felony fees.
The Sun Sentinel studies that Gov. Rick Scott issued an government order Friday postponing Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper from office whilst she faces the costs.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office says Cooper, who surrendered Thursday, has been charged with cash laundering, respectable misconduct and exceeding marketing campaign contribution limits following an undercover FBI investigation. Prosecutors say Cooper, a Democrat, is also charged with the misdemeanor soliciting contributions in a central authority construction.
Her lawyer, Larry Davis, says she plans to plead no longer accountable.
The felonies elevate most jail sentences of 5 years. The misdemeanor has a most one-year jail time period.
Cooper has been Hallandale Beach mayor since 2005 and prior to now served at the town fee starting in 1999.
Hallandale Beach is south of Fort Lauderdale.
