Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia took a depart of absence Friday, after allegations surfaced that she groped a former male legislative staffer. She denies the claims.
Assemblywoman Susan Eggman, a Stockton Democrat, will take over as intervening time chair of the ladies’s caucus, which advocates for insurance policies supporting girls and women.
“These are certainly difficult times, but I know that the caucus remains committed to addressing and ending the culture of sexual harassment and assault that hurts women and men alike in the Legislature and across California,” Democratic Sen. Connie Leyva, the vice chair, stated in a commentary.
Garcia’s case provides a shocking new twist to the California Legislature’s widening sexual harassment scandal that first broke open final fall and triggered two male assemblymen to renounce.
Garcia, who represents southeast Los Angeles, have been probably the most vocal critics in opposition to her colleagues and a staunch suggest of the #MeToo motion.
Her picture was once even featured as one of the most “Silence Breakers” in Time Magazine’s Person of the Year factor.
The Assembly is investigating a declare through Daniel Fierro, the previous group of workers member, that Garcia rubbed his again, touched his buttocks and tried to seize his groin at a legislative softball recreation in 2014.
Fierro previously labored for Democratic Assemblyman Ian Calderon, the bulk chief, and now runs a communications company.
